the buddha is reclining in iizuka

Some graffiti near my apartment. A positive message of gratitude.

One weekend I went Iizuka (ee-ee-zoo-ka) with my friend Tetsuya. We went to see the largest bronze Buddha in the world. I had a great time taking pictures and enjoying the mountain views. We also went to an onsen which contained waters naturally infused with radon, which has many health benefits believe it or not, and it felt great. The ride down took about 40 minutes from Fukuoka. As you can see from the pictures the Buddha is amazing. There are so many images of the different stages of Buddha’s life. All of the little Buddha’s had woolen caps that keep them warm during winter, adorable.

The other strange shots are from my neighborhood, it was such a nice day that day.

River views from the small bridge I cross everyday by bike to the train station.

Most shrines or temples have small basins for washing the hands. This one was a huge stone that looks like petrified wood or something. Or a gemstone. Anyway, they hollowed out the stone to make the basin. Intense and visually wonderful.

At the edge of a rock trail overlook at the reclining Iizuka Buddha shrine/temple complex.
A small floral offering at one of the many statues of the various aspects of Buddhahood. (Representations include Buddha as a student, child, scholar, wise man, etc.).
The mountains are the perfect background.

A close-up of the cleansing basin.
Cups are provided for your spiritual rinsing needs.
(They were out of the gallon container and hose on my visit!).

No, not unhappy. This self-portrait is just how I shoot myself lately.

Hand-knitted apparel for the statuary is one of the charming aspects.
One sees how the spirits are cared for.

As small sort of shrine before the staircase leading to the Buddha.

This view is looking from Buddha's head towards the mountain, where he is 'gazing'.
Recently there had been a New Year's ceremony and the wood fencing is from that event.

Protector of Children. There were several images like this around the shrine.

Just napping. A stunning bit of bronze-making. Notice the detail in the hair.

I keep being reminded of the Virgin Mary.

Nothing prepares you for the scale of the statue.
Row after row of sutra carvings in black stone for the devout.

Baby Buddha is my favorite.
Innocence and wisdom combined.

Designs adorn Buddha's feet. Where people place coins for luck.

I hope you enjoyed the post. Fare thee well.
